TheAcademy.com and Salus Education, LLC, Announce Partnership to Benefit Texas Schools and Students with Diabetes - 07.31.09
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS 07/31/2009:
TheAcademy.com, a leader in innovative eLearning management technology (Athena Learning Management System™), and Salus Education, LLC, an emerging eLearning company specializing in diabetes training, announce a partnership to deliver Diabetes Care at School: Bridging the Gap to Texas schools. This landmark, web-based, diabetes education and training program was created specifically to help elementary and secondary schools comply with state and federal requirements while creating a safe and supportive learning environment for students with diabetes.
Allen Sproul, MS, RD, LD, CDE, and Craig Olson, MS, RD, LD, co-founders of Salus Education, have combined their knowledge and experience to create Diabetes Care at School: Bridging the Gap, and deliver it to schools in an extraordinarily cost-effective manner. "There isn't another program like this anywhere in the world, so we're very excited to offer it first in our home state of Texas. The fact that we've been able to make it cost effective for schools is an added bonus" said Craig Olson. "In addition to evidence-based instruction, we provide all of the resources and training materials school personnel will need as they learn how to assist students with diabetes" he added. According to Allen Sproul, "One of the most common and frustrating barriers that school personnel have faced in the past is limited access to necessary diabetes care equipment and supplies such as glucose meters, emergency glucagon injection kits, ketone testing strips, and insulin injection devices. To help eliminate this barrier, Salus Education has assembled a unique training kit that allows a minimum of three Unlicensed Diabetes Care Assistants (UDCAs) to complete the competency assessment portion of their training."
Diabetes Care at School: Bridging the Gap is ideal for schools with or without a school nurse. School nurses can earn 6 hours of continuing nursing education (CNE) credit while building upon their diabetes related knowledge. Additionally, the self-paced program will greatly enhance the school nurse’s efficiency with directing training because more staff can be trained in far less time as compared to traditional means. When a school purchases the program, all school personnel, both licensed and non-licensed, have 24/7 access to the training resources. Ideally, Chapter 1, Diabetes Awareness Training, should be viewed by all school personnel at least annually. Ultimately, parents gain the peace of mind and security that school staff will be better equipped to recognize and appropriately respond if their child experiences a potential diabetes related emergency.
